Creating your own holiday traditions!

Date: December 19, 2013 Categories: Blog

From Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day, the holidays are a favorite time of year for many families. For some families who are experiencing loss through divorce, death, or any other reason, the holidays can quickly turn from a favorite time to an especially difficult time. After experiencing loss, the opportunity to create your own family traditions can be very exciting and refreshing!

Here are some tips for creating your own traditions:

  1. Think about what you want to feel once the holidays are over: do you want to feel well rested, escape commercialism or connected to community? Thinking about what you want to gain from your holidays can help you get perspective on what you might most enjoy as a family!
  2. Accept that you have choices! You can decide who you spend your time with, where you spend your time at, and how you spend your time!
  3. Feel free to start small: Rome wasn’t made in a day! Your new family traditions can start small, like making a certain dish on New Year’s Eve or playing a board game instead of shopping on Black Friday!
  4. If you are experiencing a loss through divorce, death, or estrangement, it is okay to recognize that other people in your family may not want the same change you do, and that’s okay! Consistency may be part of what makes traditions special, but you could choose to start your own.

We hope that you found these tips helpful. We wish you a safe and happy holiday season!
