Winter Family Events

Kids are likely to get bored with so much time off school in the near future, unless their parents have a few tricks up their sleeves. Luckily, family-friendly activities are offered locally all winter.


Christmas in the District – 12/3-24 – carolers, concerts, contests, light show display, “Santa Paws” dog parade/costume contest, “The Running of the Santas”, Great Hall of Trees and Santa’s Playland


St. Nicholas Day Fair – 12/6, 10 AM-4 PM, French Market – Free event with kid craft booths, petting zoo, mini golf, photo booth and holiday music


Algiers Bonfire and Concert – 12/6, 5:30-8:30 PM – Free event


The Canal Street Home for the Holidays site has several events listed on their site:

• 12/6 – Krewe of Jingle Parade, 1 PM
• Holiday Movies on the Mississippi – Free showings of “Polar Express” on 12/5 and “Elf” on 12/12 at 6:30 PM at Riverwalk’s Spanish Plaza
• 12/13 – Reindeer Run and Romp, Registration at 8 AM. The “holiday fun run for kids” rewards participants with “antlers, a race t-shirt and a bag of holiday goodies.” Additional activities follow the race.


Disney Junior Live will be in New Orleans on 12/11-12.


Celebration in the Oaks is open in City Park through 1/3, featuring a run/walk on 12/13. Families can enjoy StoryQuest for free at the New Orleans Art Museum (also in City Park) with paid admission to NOMA on 12/13.


Holiday Doll Tea Party – 12/13, 1:30-3PM – $10 admission, The Beauregard-Keyes House and Garden Museum 


The Audubon Zoo, Aquarium and Insectarium have holiday events scheduled:

Jingle Bugs at the Insectarium on 12/13
Santa Dive at the Aquarium on 12/17
Zoo Year’s Eve at the Zoo on 12/31


The Patio Planters offer a Holiday Home Tour, which helps finance their sponsorship of Caroling in Jackson Square, on 12/21. “Jackson Square is illuminated by hundreds of candles held by singers, both amateur and professional. The event is free and open to all who wish to participate.” The gates open at 6:30 PM, caroling begins at 7.


St. Louis Cathedral Concerts are scheduled throughout the season.

January 6, the Krewe de Jeanne d’Arc will have their annual parade.
