April is child abuse prevention month, and local celebrities are getting creative in stepping up for hundreds of abused children in Jefferson Parish while asking the public to attend the third annual Jefferson Children’s Advocacy Center Step Up For Children Gala Saturday, April 12at the Treasure Chest Casino in Kenner from 8 p.m. – 11 p.m. A patron party will begin the night from 7 p.m.- 8 p.m.

Some of New Orleans’ most recognizable faces are raising awareness to CAC statistics that one in 10 children will be sexually abused before turning 18 years old.  Community leaders who have decorated wooden step stools for the gala auction include Shelley Brown (Fox 8) and Chet Pourciau (artist), Gayle Benson (New Orleans Saints), Keith Eccles (artist), Randi Rousseau (WDSU), Susan Roesgen (WGNO) and Simone Hardeveld (artist), Bruce Katz (Fox 8), Christy Works-Boutte (artist), Blain Kern (“Mr. Mardi Gras”), Sheba Turk (WWL-TV) and Rachel Wulff (WDSU).  

Admission includes food, beverages, raffles and live music from one of New Orleans’ most popular bands, The Yat Pack, performing classic big-band numbers by Sinatra, Prima, Dean Martin and Bobby Darin as well as contemporary artists like Michael Bublé, Billy Joel, Joe Cocker and Harry Connick Jr. Jay Galle (WDSU) and Melanie Hebert (formerly WWL-TV and WDSU) will emcee the gala.

In addition to the hand-crafted stools, live and silent auction items include airline tickets, artwork from famed artists including James Michalopoulos and Terrance Osborne, fishing trips with Jefferson Parish Sheriff Newell Normand and WWL-TV Contributor and fishing expert Don Dubuc, LSU football tickets, autographed Les Miles football, autographed Pelicans basketball, Saints jersey, 50-yard line plaza Saints tickets and a variety of jewelry, hotel accomodations and restaurant gift cards among many other items.
